Connecting Your Domain: How It Works and How Long It Takes

In this article, we’ll explain what DNS records are, how the connection works, and how long it can take before your website is available.

What are DNS records?

DNS records help connect your domain to your website. You can think of them as an address book for the internet.

When someone enters your domain name in their browser, the DNS records tell the browser where your website is hosted. In this case, they point visitors to your website at Time4VPS.

How does domain connection work?

If your domain is registered with another provider and your website is hosted at Time4VPS, you’ll need to update the domain’s DNS records.

After you make the changes, it can take up to 24 hours for them to fully take effect. Once the changes have been processed, your website will be available through your domain.

How long does it take for your website to go online?

After you change your DNS records, internet service providers (ISPs) around the world need to update the information they have for your domain.

Some providers update this information quickly, while others may take longer. Because of this, the connection can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours.

There’s nothing you need to do during this time. The process happens automatically, and it can’t be sped up.

What happens while your domain is connecting?

Changing your DNS records doesn’t affect your website editor. You can continue working on your website and make changes as usual.

The main thing that can be affected is access to your website. While the DNS changes are taking effect:

  • Your website may be temporarily unavailable for up to 24 hours.

  • It may work for visitors in some locations but not in others.

  • It may work on some devices but not on others.

This is normal while the DNS changes are being updated around the world.

Once the changes have fully taken effect, your website should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or device. This usually happens much sooner than 24 hours.

So...

DNS changes usually take 30 minutes to 24 hours to complete. You can continue editing your website while you wait. Temporary differences in access during this time are normal.
